The historic Weir Pumps manufacturing plant looks destined to stay at its Victorian home of Cathcart on the south side of Glasgow, after the collapse of housebuilder Cala's proposed multimillion-pound purchase of this site, The Herald has learned.

Renamed Clyde Pumps after its acquisition by engineering entrepreneur Jim McColl from Weir Group in 2007, the firm had been due to leave the site it has occupied since 1886 by July at the latest. McColl had been considering a new-build plant in Cambuslang, near Glasgow.

Asked by The Herald about the status of his housebuilding firm's agreement in summer 2006 to purchase the Cathcart site from Weir Group, Cala chairman Geoff Ball said it had "lapsed".

Mr Ball confirmed there had been conditions about planning permission. Declaring there had been "delays on the planning" approval for hundreds of houses and flats that his company was looking to build at Cathcart, he revealed Cala was able to withdraw from the deal as a result.

The door appears open for Mr McColl to acquire the land, ensuring it remains the home of the pump-manufacturing business.
