Recession offers a chance to build a fairer society

The kidnapping of Shannon Matthews brought it home to me. Night after night, news bulletins talked about the nine-year-old child who lived in a severely deprived area. But what I was looking at on television was the Matthews' semi-detached house with a garden at the side and rear, backing on to a field.
