Parties vie for control of densely populated authority in middle of major regeneration

ALTHOUGH geographically one of the smallest councils in Scotland, it is also one of the most populous and is dominated by Paisley.

Once one of the wealthiest towns in the UK, Paisley has never recovered from over-supply of space created by the Piazza shopping centre and Braehead sounded the death knell for shopping not only in Paisley, but also Johnstone and Renfrew.

The first phase in the council's plan to regenerate the town involves £7m over the next five years to upgrade derelict shop units and attract retailers, but many believe the decline is irreversible.
