Church of Scotland minister;

Died March 23, 2007.

William John MacLeod was born in Breakish on the Isle of Skye and died in Strathcarron Hospice, Stirlingshire.

Following his education in Broadford, Skye, Willie worked for a period in the local bank until he was called to war service. After the war he worked in Glasgow before returning to Skye where he was employed as a shepherd.

After studying at Glasgow University and Trinity College for the Church of Scotland ministry, Willie was ordained and inducted to the Island of Tiree in May 1963 where he served for eight fruitful years until called to St David's Memorial Church, Kirkintilloch, in June 1971.

He served there until his retirement in September 1988. He is remembered for his simple and uncomplicated presentation of the Gospel, as a man of energy and vision, a committed and faithful pastor, a man of prayer and a great sense of humour.

Willie was a native Gaelic speaker. On Tiree, he maintained a Gaelic and English ministry and in Kirkintilloch continued to preach in Gaelic at communion seasons on the west coast islands and on radio and television. On retirement Willie supported a number of congregations through pulpit supply and locum ministry and, when time permitted, indulged his hobby of fishing.

Willie is survived by his wife, Ella; children Christeen and Neil; grandchildren Fiona, Stuart, William and James; and his brother, Calum.
