JK Rowling is the world's highest-earning celebrity, according to a survey by business magazine Forbes which ranks Gordon Ramsay for the first time.

The author of the Harry Potter series has risen to number nine on the celebrity power list after raking in £152m over the past year - adding to her estimated wealth of £560m.

Combining this with the revenue she is still to receive from the three films of her last two books could put her in the running to become the richest person in Scotland.

Meanwhile, television chef Ramsay has made it on to the list at number 95 after taking his brand stateside.

And, despite speculation that her popularity might be waning American talk-show host, Oprah Winfrey, retains the number one spot as the world's most powerful celebrity. She was second to Rowling in the earning stakes.

The Forbes list is designed to reflect the influence of a celebrity in any one year. It looks at how much a celebrity is paid, and how much attention they are receiving from other people.

According to Forbes, British celebrities are out in force this year. A return to the England team has seen David Beckham's endorsements rise, giving him a place in the top five for the first time. Other Britons on the list include X Factor judge Simon Cowell (22), actress Keira Knightley (37) and Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe (64).

Hollywood is showing signs of change. Although traditional power players such as Tom Cruise (31) and Steven Spielberg (13) are still there, they are joined this year by emerging talents such as Judd Apatow (82) and Katherine Heigl (73).

The press coverage surrounding Angelina Jolie (3) and Brad Pitt (10) shows no sign of abating as they wait for their twins to arrive.
