The man who blew himself up while trying to kill diners in a restaurant is the least sophisticated person to be charged with terrorism, the Old Bailey was told yesterday.

Nicky Reilly, 22, targeted the Giraffe restaurant in Exeter, his barrister said.

Kerim Fuad said Reilly should be made the subject of an interim hospital order.

But that was rejected by Mr Justice Calvert-Smith.

He put off sentencing to January 30, next year.

Mr Fuad had told him that doctors expressed concerns about the mental state of Reilly who suffers from Asperger's Syndrome.

The judge said anything other than a long-term of incarceration in a secure institution was not possible.

Reilly, of Plymouth, Devon, pled guilty last month to attempted murder and preparing an act of terrorism.

The court heard customers at the restaurant in Exeter, fled in panic when three soft drink bottles exploded in the toilets on May 22 this year.

Stuart Baker, prosecuting, said Reilly converted to Islam between 2002 and 2003.

He had been intent on becoming a martyr by killing himself and others. He wrote: "That is my dream."
