Family-owned Simpsons Malt has netted funding that will allow it to increase production by 57% at its key Northumberland facility.

The Berwick-based company, which has a grain store at Craigswalls in the south of Scotland and supplies malted barley and other specialist malts to brewing, distilling and food companies across the UK, has secured £27.5m to invest in malting equipment. It has also been handed undisclosed finance to make malting brewery purchases.

The company is investing in four new germinating and kilning vessels at Berwick, which will come into operation by early 2009. This will increase production at the site to 220,000 tonnes a year, compared to 140,000 at present, making it the single largest maltings in the UK, the company said.

The funding was provided by Barclays and Lloyds TSB.
