Harry Redknapp, the Tottenham Hotspur manager admitted his frustration after their 1-1 draw at
Aston Villa left the race for Champions League football wide open.
Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea and Newcastle United all have a shot at qualifying on the final day of the season. Arsenal go to West Bromwich Albion, Tottenham take on Fulham, Chelsea are at home to Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle are at Everton. Should Chelsea finish outside the top four, they could relegate the fourth-placed team to the Europa League if they defeat Bayern Munich in the Champions League final.
Tottenham would have been assured of fourth at least with a win, while Villa moved close to survival after their draw. Chris Herd's deflected opener gave Alex McLeish's side the lead before Emmanuel Adebayor equalised from the spot after Danny Rose was sent off for Tottenham as a result of a challenge on his former team-mate, Alan Hutton.
Redknapp said: "When you are down to 10 men and you are one-nil down it's a point gained in the end, but on the balance of the game it was two points lost. There was frustration because a win today and we were guaranteed fourth place but it's all to play for still. No one has got an easy game so it will be an interesting last game of the season."
McLeish insists he expects to remain in charge of Villa next season despite chants of 'Sack McLeish' on the final whistle.
He said: "It is as tough a season as I've had. I knew it was going to be a challenge but I've always stood up in the face of adversity.
"Randy Lerner [the owner of Villa] has been very supportive, he's sent positive texts in the last few days and there is no indication of an urgent meeting being required. I expect to be here next season and hope to win the fans over."
At the other end of the table, Bolton Wanderers and Queen's Park Rangers suffered differing fortunes. Djibril Cisse's 89th-minute goal gave QPR a 1-0 win over Stoke.
Martin Petrov's penalty and a Billy Jones own goal gave Bolton a 2-0 lead against West Brom. However, late goals from Chris Brunt and James Morrison stunned the Reebok Stadium and left Owen Coyle's team two points shy of safety. Blackburn will be relegated if they fail to beat Wigan Athletic tonight.
Clint Dempsey scored his 23rd goal of the season and Mousa Dembele struck the winner as Fulham beat Sunderland 2-1 at Craven Cottage. Phil Bardsley had levelled for Sunderland.
Relegated Wolverhampton Wanderers match with Everton ended goalless.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
