THE British Boxing Board of Control is to discuss the latest developments surrounding Scotland's former world featherweight champion Scott Harrison and decide whether his next fight can go ahead.

Robert Smith, general secretary of the sport's governing body, yesterday confirmed that the stewards of the BBBC will meet next week in Cardiff to consider Harrison's situation after he was sentenced to a four-year jail term.

It does not look good for the Scot as Smith also expressed doubt over whether Harrison can box as planned at the Kelvin Hall next month.

"We will have to hear from the various authorities first, but it isn't looking very clever for Harrison," he said. "I don't think he will be boxing on December 1, to be honest."

The BBBC stewards have it in their power to suspend Harrison's licence, but they may feel that their hands are tied because of the fact that the boxer has lodged an appeal against his sentence imposed by a Spanish court on Monday.

Harrison, found guilty of assaulting three men in a Malaga brothel six years ago, presumably will remain at liberty until his appeal is heard but his career again hangs in the balance after his latest comeback bout, against Greenock's John Simpson was thrown into doubt.

Regardless of what fate befalls Harrison, Alex Morrison, his manager and promoter, is adamant that his show will go ahead as planned. "Scott is continuing to train in preparation for his next fight," he said. "We also have an excellent undercard, so there's no reason to cancel.

"Tickets have been selling well and I'm certainly not giving up. I also believe that it has developed into a witch- hunt with people lining up to kick Scott Harrison when he's down."
