Troon's Marr College consolidated what already has been a fine season by becoming the first side to book a place in the semi-finals of the the Brewin Dolphin Under-18 Plate by beating Gordonstoun 11-8 through a try from Lewis Anderson and two penalties by Jordan Deary.
They will almost certainly be joined in the semi-finals by either Galashiels Academy or North Berwick High. They meet today in the Borders and East Lothian regional final, and the winners will have a home game against Linlithgow Academy, who are likely to struggle against either of two of the strongest state school sides in Scotland.
Also in the national Plate quarter-finals at U18 level are Kelvinside Academy, who travel to play the amalgamated Boroughmuir/James Gillespie's High Schools in a tie scheduled for two weeks tomorrow at Meggetland. The remaining quarter-final is between Madras College and Millburn Academy. Madras left it late to secure their place in the last eight when they played their north-east Fife rivals, Bell-Baxter High, in the Tayside and Fife regional final, a try by flanker Ally Taylor providing the passport to the next round.
The finals of the Brewin Dolphin Scottish Schools Cup at both U18 and U16 levels will be staged at Murrayfield on Thursday, with Merchiston sides featuring in both finals. They face George Watson's College in the senior game and Strathallan at U16 level.
n In non-cup action, Edinburgh Academy were 22-12 winners over Glenalmond College, with tries from centre Tom Grey, prop Andrew McWilliam, wing Tom Salisbury and flanker Mack Millar and one conversion from Alex Swan, while Stewart's-Melville College bounced back from their cup semi-final loss to Watson's with a 17-0 victory over Glasgow Academy at New Anniesland.
Loretto posted a 35-14 win over Dollar Academy, Strathallan beat Glasgow High 38-0 and Dundee High shook off the disappointment of their cup quarter-final loss to Merchiston with a 30-0 win over Robert Gordon's College at Countesswells.
