Richard Wallis may have won the Titleist PGA Play-offs by four strokes last night but there was play-off drama for a Tartan Tour trio in Turkey as the weather-shortened event drew to a tense conclusion at the Antalya resort, writes Nick Rodger.
Scott Henderson, Greig Hutcheon and Gareth Wright finished in a share of third place with three-under-par aggregates of 210 and had to fight it out in a sudden-death shoot-out for the one remaining place in next year's Great Britain & Ireland PGA Cup team. In the end, it was Henderson, the former European Tour Rookie of the Year, who took the prize when he knocked his approach on the first play-off hole to four feet and rolled in the birdie putt.
Hutcheon, the Tartan Tour's order of merit winner this year, had a coveted spot in the club professionals' equivalent of the Ryder Cup in his grasp until he hit his tee-shot at the 18th into the water and racked up a double-bogey on his way to a closing one-over 72. That dropped him back to a three-under tally with Wright and Henderson, who bolstered his bid with a best-of-the-day 67.
By claiming top-10 finishes yesterday, the domestic trio all earned invitations to the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth next May, but Henderson can pencil another significant date into his diary. "It's an honour to make the team; I wasn't expecting it," said the Aberdonian, who will line up in his fellow Scot Russell Weir's side for the biennial match with the USA at Slaley Hall.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
