A day after committing the rest of his rugby career to Glasgow Warriors, Al Kellock enjoyed further satisfaction by guiding his side to victory at Scotstoun last night in the first of Scottish rugby's festive derbies.

The Glasgow captain admitted that Edinburgh had done well to keep their bid to regain the 1872 Challenge Cup alive, with the two sides to meet again on Saturday. However, in the context of these matches the advantage secured by a 23-14 win last night is significant.

"We've got four points which was massively important in the league campaign," he said. "Next week will be an entirely different challenge, but I'm looking forward to my Christmas a lot more than I would have been if we hadn't squeezed that win out at the end.

"I'm sure my wife and my wee girl will be delighted that they're not going to have some grump with them for the next few days, too."

Kellock was also pleased with the opening period during which Glasgow moved into a 17-point lead. "In the first half I thought we played intelligent rugby," he said. "That dink over the top that sent DTH [van der Merwe] in [for his second try] having read their defence was really pleasing.

"Massive credit to Edinburgh for the way they came out in that second half. They were a very, very different team to play against, their big ball carriers got themselves into the game and they pushed us incredibly hard. We didn't do it as much in the second half but the way the boys dug in was good."
