Ross County last night brought defender Cliff Byrne in on trial with a view to signing the Irishman on a contract until the end of the season.

The 31-year-old has fallen out of favour at current club Oldham Athletic and has spent this season on loan at Scunthorpe United.

His own aspirations remain with earning a move to Dingwall. "Hopefully things work out for him up there," said Lee Johnson, the Oldham manager.

County have already brought Michael Tidser in on loan from Rotherham United but the midfielder is certain his career is in England. "My future is down south," said Tidser. "That is as far as it goes for me."
