Megan Gaffney believes there are more exciting times ahead at Hillhead/Jordanhill after the Glasgow side consolidated their position as the best team in the country by lifting the RBS Women's Premier League title on Sunday.

They went into the final game away to rivals Murrayfield Wanderers knowing that victory would ensure them of the title without dropping a point. They endured their toughest test of the season but still held on to win 22-21 prompting racous celebrations.

Gaffney, 22, said: "It was a really hard match and I think most of us were still pretty sore on Monday; we certainly knew we had been in a game. We managed to hold on for the win, though, and it showed our team spirit and desire to make sure that we would win all 10 of our league matches."

Originally from North Berwick, Gaffney used to play for Wanderers but moved to Hillhead/Jordanhill at the start of the 2012/13 season.

In her first season at the club, the Glasgow University student helped them to the double, her solo try sealing the cup win over RHC on the main pitch at Murrayfield.

Their challenge this term was to maintain that level of performance, and, under Caine McIntyre, the head coach, they have managed to do just that. "It has been a great few months for us," said Gaffney. "We have worked on our individual skills and as a team, particularly on defensive aspects, and that has made us tough to beat."

The next match Gaffney and her team-mates will have is the Sarah Beaney Cup semi-final in late March against Murrayfield Wanderers, but before then her focus is on the RBS 6 Nations with Scotland.

With a new coaching team of Jules Maxton, Derek O'Riordan and Roland Reid in place, they have put together a new-look squad with Scotland's first match away to Ireland next Friday.

Scotland have failed to register a single point in the competition since beating France and drawing with Italy in 2010 but Gaffney, who plays wing or centre and has won nine caps, is optimistic that some new blood can arrest that miserable run.

"The training camps have gone well and it is an exciting time for the national team. We are a new group following a number of retirements but we are looking forward to testing ourselves against the best."
