It was a clash of the titans. Here's how the players performed:

MANCHESTER CITY

JOE HART: Made fine saves to deny Ramires and Eden Hazard, underlining his return to form, but could do little to keep out Ivanovic's strike. 7

PABLO ZABALETA: One of City's most consistent performers had a tough night trying to contain Hazard. 6

VINCENT KOMPANY: Firm and commanding in defence and showed willingness to get forward but there was some poor work around him. 7

MATIJA NASTASIC: Made some good defensive interventions but his understanding with Kompany was lacking under pressure. 6

ALEKSANDAR KOLAROV: Provided a great attacking outlet and delivered some dangerous crosses but was caught short defensively. 6

JESUS NAVAS: Tried to run at the Chelsea defence but was unable to exert much influence. 6

MARTIN DEMICHELIS: Pushed into a midfield role and soon began to look uncomfortable, both in possession and defensively. 5

YAYA TOURE: Looked at his rampaging best early on, creating chances and going close himself, but influence waned as Chelsea took charge. 7

DAVID SILVA: Lively in the early stages, cutting through the Chelsea defence but then had a quiet spell before twice going close as City rallied. 7

ALVARO NEGREDO: Showed strength in the early stages before firing over but he offered little else and was taken off before the hour. 5

EDIN DZEKO: Got himself into some good positions and threatened but could not find the finish. 6

SUBSTITUTES:

STEVAN JOVETIC (on for Negredo, 57): Tried to find a way through and went close to equaliser by testing Cech with a fine late shot. 6

CHELSEA

PETR CECH: Had a quiet night but alert when called upon to save from Silva and Jovetic. 7

BRANISLAV IVANOVIC: Looked like Negredo might give him a tough night in the early stages but he responded to win that battle, producing a fine all-round display and firing a fine goal. 8

GARY CAHILL: Showed his worth with some timely interceptions as City made a lot of the early running, and got forward to hit the post. 8

JOHN TERRY: Usual calm and assured presence at the back, rarely out of position. 8

CESAR AZPILICUETA: Completed a strong Chelsea back line, timed his challenges well. 7

DAVID LUIZ: Not one of his more spectacular performances but, a poor free-kick aside, it was composed. 6

NEMANJA MATIC: Struggled to deal with some of Toure's powerful runs but grew into the game. 6

RAMIRES: Burst forward at every opportunity, providing the spark for a number of counter-attacks. 8

WILLIAN: Another powerful threat going forward, City struggled to contain him. 7

EDEN HAZARD: Showed great pace down the right and delivery to the box was dangerous. 8

SAMUEL ETO'O: In general, maybe the least threatening of Chelsea's attacking quartet but still hit the woodwork in a good showing. 7

SUBSTITUTES:

OSCAR (on for Ramires, 83): Did not have enough time to get into the game. 6

JON OBI MIKEL (on for Willian, 90): -

DEMBA BA (on for Hazard, 90: -
