Ally McCoist has claimed Rangers deserve a greater ticket allocation than Dundee United when the teams meet in next month's William Hill Scottish Cup semi-final.

The boss of the new League One champions believes the the backing his club's faithful have given throughout the season, not just for the showpiece games, should be rewarded by Scottish Football Association.

His comments come after the row sparked by United chairman Stephen Thompson when he claimed the Tangerines would be at unfairly disadvantage playing the tie in Govan.

Dundee United only took 6500 fans to last season's semi-final against Celtic and Ibrox manager McCoist thinks it would be "strange" to give them a 50 per cent split for the last four clash.

McCoist said, "I don't have a problem with Dundee United getting half the tickets.

"It's strange the last semi-final they played at Hampden attracted a crowd of 24,000 against Celtic.

"Against Dunfermline last week we had 44,000 and they're turning up for every home game.

"Our fans don't just turn out for big semi-finals, they turn out every week."

The SFA claim United asked for just 8,000 tickets but Thompson says the governing body is being "economical with the truth".

But United tried to play down the row by releasing a statement on Wednesday morning.

It said: "Regarding the William Hill Scottish Cup semi-final ticketing and venue issue, the Club today held constructive discussions with senior officials from the Scottish FA and both parties have agreed to conduct future consideration on this matter in private."
