The freight industry has called for Commonwealth Games organisers to provide detailed information about the route network within 50 days to help minimise disruption to deliveries during the event.

The Freight Transport Association (FTA) said its members need full details so they can plan how to carry out deliveries, both to places associated with the Games and to shops, restaurants and offices in the city.

It warned preparations for freight deliveries are far behind those made ahead of the London Olympics in 2012.

The FTA has called for full details of plans before its conference on May 13, when it said delegates will expect answers.

Chris MacRae, FTA's head of policy for Scotland, said: "The freight and logistics industry will play a huge part in helping to deliver essential food, drink and supplies not only to the Games venues themselves but also to the residents and businesses of the city and in order to do so, it is vital to prepare well ahead.

"At the equivalent stage ahead of the Olympics in 2012, the Games Route Network (GRN) was known in detail and the Freight Working Group had met several times.

"For Glasgow the GRN is still only a map without any published detail on actual restrictions, times or postcodes released and the Freight Working Group only met for the first time on 11th March. We also still have no information on the venue security accreditation procedures.

"The sooner FTA can get this information the sooner we can help our logistics members plan around the Games and the sooner they can help their customers - the businesses and citizens of Glasgow - to plan around the Games to make them a success."

It said that once the information is received, preparations will have to be made in a rush, which will hamper efforts by logistics businesses to avoid the inevitable disruption that the Games will cause.

FTA's conference "Managing deliveries and servicing during the Commonwealth Games 2014" takes place at the Doubletree Dunblane Hydro on May 13, with the Games organisers, Transport Scotland and Police Scotland.

The Commonwealth Games run from July 23 to August 3.

A Glasgow 2014 spokesman said: "Glasgow 2014 is working positively and collaboratively with Glasgow City Council, Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, Police Scotland, Transport Scotland and other partners to ensure both residents and businesses are informed, prepared and ready for the Games.

"The public communication and engagement campaign Get Ready Glasgow was launched with an event for the business community in November 2013 and will continue through until Games time. We will be providing as much information as we can at every stage of the process to aid businesses in their planning to ensure a successful Games for everyone.

"An information event for key business groups and representatives' stakeholders including a number of freight and logistics organisations took place in February, jointly delivered by the Organising Committee and Glasgow City Council as part of the Get Ready Glasgow campaign which shared more about how to plan for the Games and the support packages available to assist them. The Freight Transport Association, along with the Road Haulage Association were in attendance.

"Glasgow 2014 holds regular discussions with freight organisations and a specific freight forum has been established in association with the FTA, which was held earlier this month. We are also attending the FTA annual meeting in May and will work closely with them from now until the Games to help with their planning."
