Gordon Smith, the former St Johnstone defender, has died at the age of 59.

Smith, who also played four times for the Scotland under-23 side, left Perth for Aston Villa in an £80,000 deal in the summer of 1976 after making 142 appearances and scoring ten goals for the club.

While at Villa, his cross led to the Brian Little goal which won the 1977 League Cup final against Everton at Old Trafford.

Born in Patrick in 1954 to a footballing family - his grandfather, Willie Salisbury, lifted the Scottish Cup with Thistle in 1921 - Smith could play in midfield and defence and also went on to appear for Tottenham Hotspur and Wolverhampton Wanders.
