SEVEN clubs have applied for 'up to four' new places in next season's Lowland League.

The new division was set up last summer to form the base of a pyramid system in Scottish football, with the winner next term going into a play-off with the Highland League champions for the right to earn a showdown with the bottom team in SPFL League 2.

Stadium, financial and playing criteria meant 12 teams were accepted last year, with Spartans being crowned inaugural winners at the weekend, but the intention was always to expand that to 16.

Applications have been received from Broomhill Sports Club in Glasgow, Burntisland Shipyard, Civil Service Strollers, Coldstream, Duns, Edinburgh University and Lothian Thistle with a decision expected within the next few weeks.

If clubs cannot achieve the necessary Scottish Football Association licence by May next year, two places only may be filled.
