GLASGOW City continued their domination of women's football in Scotland last night as they swept aside an under-strength Hibernian side to win a record third successive SWPL League Cup.
Goals from Scotland internationalists Sue Lappin and Jo Love, and Republic of Ireland striker Denise O'Sullivan, were enough to ensure yet another trophy would be returning to Glasgow on a wet night in the capital.
For Hibernian, the misery of May continues. Willie Kirk, their coach, admitted before the game that the suspensions of defender Siobhan Hunter and midfielder Lucy Graham - both sent off at the same ground against Spartans on Sunday - left his side with little chance of lifting the gloom. It did not take long for that assessment to be borne out.
City went ahead after nine minutes through Lappin as the club's all-time record scorer headed in Abbi Grant's cross. There was further disruption to Hibs' plans when Kayleigh McConnell was injured and had to be replaced by Ellis Jenkins.
City duly piled on the pressure and had numerous chances but Hannah Reid, the Hibs goalkeeper, restricted the scoreline to one at the interval.
City went 2-0 up when O'Sullivan took advantage of a Lappin assist just after the restart. Love then scored a third midway through the half to put the game beyond Hibs.
"It's particularly pleasing for the new players, some of whom have tasted winning a trophy for the first time," said Eddie Wolecki Black, the City head coach. "Hibs lost a couple of players in the build up to the game but that didn't result in a dip in our own performance."
