Andrew Robertson is grateful to Gordon Strachan for giving him the encouragement to attack from full-back when the defender made his first start for Scotland on Wednesday night.

The Dundee United player impressed during a 77-minute display against Nigeria as the national team drew at Craven Cottage. Robertson attacked with vigour from left-back, offering the same threat which has marked him out during matches for his club side.

The 20-year-old acknowledged that he was simply following instructions from the Scotland manager. "The style of play with Scotland is the same as at United, where the gaffer tells us to pick our moments well and get forward as much as possible," said Robertson.

"That's what Gordon likes us to do. He told us to get forward and try to create chances and that is what I tried to do, although I know I'm a defender first and foremost."
