Edinburgh's Polly Swann secured the gold medal in the European Championships yesterday after reprising her partnership with Helen Glover.

The women won the gold when they shared a boat at the World Championships.

The narrative for the final might have been quite different for Swann as she was supposed to compete alongside Heather Stanning. However, she was ruled out due to fatigue ahead of the event and Glover stepped in seamlessly.

The pair started modestly from lane three before powering to a convincing victory with a time of 7:03.62. It was a time which lowered the Championships best and allowed the British pair to finish a full five seconds ahead of their closest rivals from Romania.

"You are always nervous at the beginning of the season. It's good to get a win under our belts," said Swann afterwards.

The lightweight men's pair - which included Kirriemuir's Jono Clegg - fell just short in their final, falling behind the Swiss duo to record a time of 6:30.32 which was good enough for second place.

Imogen Walsh, of Inverness, also finished among the medals as part of the women's lightweight pairs. The Scot competed alongside Olympic gold-medallist Kat Copeland and finished in third place. "I'm not elated about it but I'm not devastated either," said Walsh, after receiving her bronze medal.

There was no medal success for the men's pair as Alan Sinclair, of Munlochy, partnered Nathaniel Reilly-O'Donnell to a fourth-placed finish in the final. The two men crossed the line just two tenths of a second behind the Germans in third.

Premnay's Victoria Meyer-Laker raced in the women's quadruple scull, with her crew claiming fifth place in the final.
