Ian Wilson, the Glasgow promoter, has won the purse bids to stage an intriguing British title eliminator double-header featuring Highland heavyweight Gary Cornish and Paisley light-middleweight Kris Carslaw.
Cornish, from Inverness, was nominated to fight Sam Sexton of England for the right to become the first Scot to contest the Lonsdale Belt at the weight while Carslaw, from Paisley, is to challenge Jason Wellbourn.
Tommy Gilmour, who manages both boxers, said: "Ian is out of the country on business at the moment but he was absolutely delighted when I told him. He is one of the youngest and brightest promoters in the game and this represents an ambitious step forward for Scottish boxing.
"Unless I am very much mistaken, this will be the first time in history that a Scottish heavyweight has fought a British title eliminator on home soil. When Ken Shaw, who was from Dundee and who was managed by my father, contested an eliminator against Freddie Mills in the early 1950s, the fight took place in London.
"Ian has it in mind to stage a double bill, probably at the start of September. I know there are still some people who question just how good Gary Cornish is, but he's done everything asked of him so far and delivered 18 straight wins."
Meanwhile, former world champion Scott Harrison expects to learn today if he has been successful in his bid to resume his career. The featherweight appeared before the British Boxing Board of Control stewards in Cardiff after applying to have his licence reinstated. Last in action 15 months ago when he lost on points to Liam Walsh, Harrison's licence was suspended for various breaches of discipline including bringing the sport into disrepute. However, the 36-year-old from Cambuslang believes he is entitled to a fresh start.
