GAVIN GUNNING, the former Dundee United defender, will join Birmingham City on a free transfer.

The Midlands club are poised to sign the 23-year-old after Sheffield Wednesday ended their interest when Gunning failed a medical. Rangers have also been tracking the defender but will miss out. Gunning, who was tracked by Birmingham's manager Lee Clark for most of last season, spent the last three years at Tannadice following his move from Blackburn Rovers.

He made 99 appearances for United and his final outing was in the William Hill Scottish Cup Final when he was part of the side beaten 2-0 by St Johnstone.
