Ricky Burns feels he is ready to add new facets to his fighting when he makes his comeback from losing his world title.
The Scot faces unbeaten Montenegrin Dejan Zlaticanin in an official eliminator for the WBC lightweight title at Braehead Arena, near Glasgow, on Friday.
The 31-year-old switched trainers from Billy Nelson to Tony Sims, relocating his camp to Essex, after losing his WBO belt to American Terence Crawford in March.
And the Coatbridge fighter is keen to put some new ideas into practice.
Burns said: "When I first started he (Sims) was saying there were things that he would like to add and change, but it would be pointless trying to change my whole style, so we have just been working on wee things at a time.
"On the bags and the pads I've been doing it, in sparring now and again, and it's just a case of taking that into the fight now. But I think the more fights I get, the more improvements you will see.
"The training down there has been going great and the sparring has been good. Everyone in the gym is great.
"That was one of the main reasons for switching, I felt I had to freshen things up and get some new ideas, especially when you are doing the same things over and over again for so long. So I definitely made the right choice."
Burns came face to face with his opponent for the first time as the fighters met at a press conference in Glasgow.
"Because I've not watched him, I didn't realise he was that small, but he has 13 knockouts from 18 victories so he can obviously bang a bit," Burns said.
"I've not seen much footage of him but Tony has been watching him. He's a come-forward fighter with a good knockout percentage on his record so I need to give him the respect he deserves. But with the way training has gone, I'm confident of getting the win."
Burns' promoter, Eddie Hearn, has challenged the two-weight world champion to sparkle against the southpaw.
"I'm looking for a great performance," Hearn said. "Zlaticanin is going to walk him down. He's very aggressive, very short. He comes forward and throws these big, wide hooks. And I think Ricky has got the opportunity to look sensational.
"And that's what we're looking for - a statement. To show the world that Ricky Burns is still here and he wants his title back.
"That's where the pressure lies. Yes, he's got to win, but he's got to win in style.
"And that's when the pressure comes, especially with a new trainer when you are trying to put new things into practice when you have another guy trying to beat you up."
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
