Iran have departed the World Cup at the group stage and were told afterwards that Carlos Queiroz is also getting a different flight home.

The Portuguese resigned as the head coach of Iran following their defeat by Bosnia & Herzegovina in the final group match, with neither side able to progress to the last 16.

The European side were aware of that fate already, having lost against both Argentina and Nigeria earlier in the competition. They would find their stride before setting off for home, though, with Edin Dzeko, Miralem Pjanic and Avdija Vrsajevic all scoring in a comfortable win.

Those goals also tripped up the Iranians, a side which were still to score in Brazil but that arrived in Salvador knowing that progress was still a possibility. A late goal from Reza Ghoochannejhad would barely soften the blow of elimination, though.

Iran never appeared capable of registering the victory they needed to finish second in Group F and seal a place in the next round. They were discomfited by Dzeko early on and the there was little surprise when the Manchester City striker opened the scoring after 23 minutes.

Masoud Shojaei directed a shot on to the crossbar in response, but Bosnia retained control of the match and added a second goal through Pjanic just before the hour. Vedad Ibisevic also came close with a shot as Iran wilted.

Ghoochannejhad did record his country's first World Cup goal with eight minutes left. However, Vrsajevic drilled in Bosnia's third goal less than a minute later.
