Allan Wells has criticised the lack of commitment from Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt to testing himself at this month's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The 1980 Olympic 100 metres champion had lobbied his latest successor to the sprinting crown to be on the main bill at Hampden Park but, if he is named in Jamaica's team as expected today, it will solely be for the relay.
Athletics' biggest draw will also miss next week's Sainsbury's Grand Prix at Hampden Park with compatriot Yohan Blake heading a 100m field which also includes the British quartet Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, James Dasaolu, Richard Kilty and UK champion Dwain Chambers. But Wells believes Bolt's likely Commonwealth entry will be an unsatisfying cameo.
"If he takes the baton on the last leg, then the other guys will have to be three or four metres in front to make sure the Jamaicans don't win," he said. "But I don't know how well he'd want to run. To come along and not run the individuals is really disappointing. I'm very disappointed he doesn't look at the Commonwealths favourably. If he'd said he wasn't coming at all, then fine. But he looks like he's hanging on."
British 100m champion Asha Philip is to take on the USA's Carmelita Jeter and Jamaica's Verena Sailor at the Grand Prix on July 11-12.
