Saltire nail polish was all the rage at Wimbledon yesterday.
A quartet of highly-rated Scottish girls gatecrashed the girls' singles at SW19 and while two live on into the second round, there was something for all four to build upon.
Maia Lumsden, the 16-year-old from Glasgow who now practises out in Amsterdam, was the headline act, battling from a set down to win 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-4 against Catherine Cartan Bellis, a 15-year-old from San Francisco who just happened to be the No.2 seed. Isabelle Wallace, a 17-year-old Invernesian who spent some of her teenage years in Melbourne, joined her in the second round after a 6-1, 6-2 win against Julia Grahber, of Austria.
Another Glaswegian, Anna Brogan, wasn't so lucky. The 16-year-old qualifier was left ruing an inability to take chances in a creditable 6-3, 6-4 loss against the exotically-named No.3 seed Tornado Black, while 15-year-old Anastasia Mikheeva - like Wallace, also sporting blue-and-while fingernails - went down 6-4, 6-3 to Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko.
