Olympic and multiple world champion Alistair Brownlee achieved his main target for 2014 yesterday when he became the first man to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games.

It was the Yorkshireman's first Commonwealth title and with younger brother Jonny completing what had always looked like an inevitable gold and silver family double he proclaimed his satisfaction.

"The Commonwealths was the biggest thing for me this year, the major goal. I knew I couldn't win the world title so the Commonwealths was the big thing," said the 26-year-old, who missed this season's first two World Series events due to injury.

"That's the most important thing for me. To complete the set of titles is perfect, far more than I ever hoped for."

Brownlee also spoke warmly about the course at Strathclyde Park, the conditions and Marc Austin, the young Scot who pushed the brothers for longer than anyone else.

"It was a brilliant course. I wish every triathlon course was like this," he said.

"It was a real tough bike course. It was brilliant. I loved it. It was hotter…no one would think it would be hot in Glasgow but it was pretty hot today," said Brownlee.

"I was just amazed that he (Austin) was with us. He was really really doing all he could to stay with us. I think he's one for the future. He did well today. He's probably one of the only British athletes we've had who's swum and biked with me and Jonny so good on him."
