Scot Reece McFadden produced the major shock of the opening day of the Glasgow 2014 boxing tournament by beating the two-time European champion and world number one Andrew Selby by a unanimous decision.

The Team Scotland flyweight started his opening fight in aggressive fashion, winning the first round on all three judges' scorecards and slowly dragged his vastly experienced Welsh opponent into a war that was both controversial and explosive.

Selby won the second round unanimously, but he  started showboating in the second round after being caught by a strong right hand and was deducted a point early in the third for spitting out his gumshield for a third time.

The Turkish referee, Yasar Cinar, deducted another point before the end when the gumshield came out for a fourth time, but McFadden wrapped the contest up in a storming finish and was rated a 29-26 winner by all three of the scorers.

Meanwhile, Lewis Benson saw his Commonwealth Games dreams shattered as he was knocked out of the boxing competition in the first round.

Benson lost out in his match after dropping a split decision to Bowyn Morgan of New Zealand.

He was wobbled by a left hook midway through round two and despite a gutsy display he could not do enough to haul back the points deficit.

The Scots boxer tweeted after the match: "Gutted isn't the word, I gave it my all. Thought I won the first and third but that punch in the second changed the fight. I will be back.

"Big thanks to everyone who has supported me. The messages mean so much to me, feels good to have everyone behind me. Thanks again."
