ALEX MARSHALL was last night named as winner of the Emirates Lonsdale Trophy as Scottish Sportsperson of the Year.

The bowler from Tranent, East Lothian won gold medals for Scotland in both the men's pairs and men's fours at the Commonwealth Games, and was rewarded with the honour of carrying the Saltire at the closing ceremony.

Marshall, 47, is now level with Allan Wells as Scotland's most decorated individual Games athlete, with four golds to his name. He was honoured by Commonwealth Games Scotland (CGS) at last night's Team Scotland awards dinner having beaten runners-up Ross Murdoch and para-cycling partners Neil Fachie and Craig MacLean to the top prize, for which he won two business-class flights to Dubai from sponsors Emirates, plus a cheque for £1,000.

CGS chairman Michael Cavanagh said: "The last few weeks has given Scotland so many new sporting heroes and great moments that will live on in the memory for years to come, which together resulted in Team Scotland's most successful Games ever.

"Selecting just one winner was an incredibly difficult task, and I am sure we all have our own personal Games highlight, but the achievements of our men's bowlers led by Alex Marshall was quite outstanding and when added to Alex's long list of achievements at world level, it clearly makes him a very worthy winner."

Katie Archibald, who cycled in five events at the Games and won bronze in the points race, fought off stiff competition from Erraid Davies and Kirsty Gilmour to win the Sir Peter Heatly Trophy as Young Sportsperson of the Year.

As part of the GB team pursuit squad Archibald, who only turned 20 in March, had already won world and European titles over the past 12 months.
