Darren O'Dea has been released by Metalurh Donetsk just 12 months into a three-year contract.

The Irish defender, who began his senior career with Celtic, moved to the Ukraine last summer.

The 27-year-old ended a six-year spell at Celtic Park in 2012 to join Major League Soccer side Toronto, joining Metalurh only a year later. An itinerant career has also comprised loan spells with Reading, Ipswich Town and Leeds United, while O'Dea has also made 20 appearances for the Republic of Ireland.

He remains upbeat about his future. In a Twitter post, O'Dea wrote: "My Ukraine adventure has come to an end. Would like to thank the club for been [sic] nothing but great with me. Looking forward to seeing what the future holds!"
