GLASGOW's Tollcross International Swimming Centre will be the venue for next year's British Championships - an event that will double as the trials for Rio Olympic Games. Tollcross hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2014 and the IPC World Championships earlier this year.

The announcement comes as the countdown to the Games approaches the year-to-go mark. The action in the Brazilian city gets under way on 5 August 2016 and goes on until the 21st.

Chris Spice, British Swimming's national performance director, believes that Tollcross is the ideal venue for the trials. “Glasgow and Tollcross is a great choice on the back of an inspirational Commonwealth Games last year,” he said. “It’s a perfect pick for us. The refurbished pool is like a new facility and as a sport we enjoy going there as the venue, supporters and city look after us very well. The athletes and coaches are looking forward to the public packing the venue once again and getting behind them at the most important national championships of the four-year cycle.”

Tollcross was the scene of some of Scotland's proudest moments in the Commonwealth Games, with highlights including Ross Murdoch's gold medal in the 200-metres breaststroke - an event in which he beat home favourite Michael Jamieson into second place. “For me it’s going to bring back lots of great memories as I came up through the ranks at the pool and then experienced the amazing atmosphere it provided at the Commonwealth Games,” Murdoch said.

“I know it’s a great pool and I expect the swimmers will be supported by a passionate crowd who love their swimming. It’s a world-class facility which will help the swimmers pursue their Olympic goals.”
