NICKY Law has revealed he is optimistic he will be able to rediscover his best form this season under new Rangers manager Mark Warburton – and earn an extension to his current contract.

Midfielder Law has, despite being a regular goalscorer, often struggled to perform at his best during the two years he has spent on the books at the Ibrox club.

He has been subjected to abuse from his own supporters on occasion and admitted he was close to leaving during the January transfer window when he attracted interest from Huddersfield Town.

However, the former Motherwell player has started in all three competitive matches under Warburton this season and is relishing the attractive brand of football his new manager is advocating.

The 27-year-old, whose current deal expires at the end of the 2015/16 season, is hoping he can help Rangers win the Ladbrokes Championship and remain involved thereafter.

“I think everyone knows how difficult it has been for the past few years for the club,” he said. “The football's not been great. But it's night and day now with the new manager.

“He's been fantastic and you can see that all the lads have taken to him with his new ideas and style of play. The fans have too as you could hear on Friday night. They were unbelievable like they were on. You can see they are right behind us.

“That's just six weeks work, so the message is how will we be in six months? We need to improve in front of goal, but that will come."

Law added: “Last January was the closest I came to leaving. But when the new manager came in I spoke to him straight away as all the lads did.

“He was extremely positive and told me what he wanted and I've just tried to do everything he has asked. Not just myself but everyone is enjoying it just now. It's how it was supposed to be when I first signed for Rangers.

"It has been difficult the past two years. I have scored the most goals I've ever managed in my career - 25 goals over the two years and more in assists, but I haven't played as well as I did in my time at Motherwell. It's been strange.

"But with the style of play we are playing I am higher up the field and enjoying it. I'll be looking to play well. it's been a good start for me and everyone.

"I would like to extend my contract, but it is down to myself to show the manager that I deserve to be here because he has brought a few players in. And that's something we maybe haven't had in the past and he's bringing in competition for places.

“If you are not performing you will lose your place. It's up to myself and all the boys in the same position to prove you deserve a place. For the first time in a while it's very positive and everyone wants to be a part of that.”

Meanwhile, Law has welcomed the prospect of John Eustace, the veteran English midfielder who has been on trial at Murray Park, signing a deal even though it will increase the competition for his place.

He said: “He's experienced and he has played under the boss before and at Derby. They were successful and John was successful.

“He has come in and has talked to the lads about the formation because he knows how it works and how to make it work. The manager has involved him. I hope we can sort things out with John."
