FORMER Motherwell winger Jamie Murphy hopes that his £2m move to Brighton from Sheffield United will be his passport to a Scotland call-up.

Murphy, 25, who has signed a four-year contract at Brighton, has played for Scotland at under-21 level but a senior call-up has so far eluded him.

Murphy played for Scotland number two Mark McGhee at Motherwell and with the former Brighton boss still based on the south coast he hopes that he will come and run the rule over him.

"Mark McGhee was the first one that gave me a real chance in the first team, a run of games, playing games in Europe," said Murphy. "He was big for me at the time.

"If you play well enough it's always going to get talked about, so it's up to me.

"It's one of the big reasons I felt like making the move was a good thing. I want to try to get in my national team, I want to give everything I've got to try and do that."

Having lost out in the League One play-off semi-finals with Sheffield United last season, Murphy hopes to help Brighton challenge for promotion to the Premier League this term.

He added: "I'm still not quite fully over the disappointment of last season I don't think.

"I thought we were at least good enough to get to the final. It's still disappointing but you've got to move on.

"You use all your disappointments to try to push you further in your career. Hopefully things can go my way and go the team's way.

"Hopefully we can push higher here and try to get into the play-offs."

Brighton boss Chris Hughton was delighted to seal the deal for long-term target Murphy and he said: "We are really pleased to welcome Jamie to the club.

"He's a winger who can play on either flank and he will give us extra options in both wide positions.

"He's a very good age, an age where he can continue to develop as a player and build on his experience."
