Darren McGregor, the Rangers defender, has left the club by mutual consent it was confirmed last night.

McGregor made 50 appearances for the Ibrox side last season, scoring on five occasions and earning both the Player of the Year and Players' Player of the Year awards.

He has found appearances harder to come by this term though, with new Rangers manager Mark Warburton preferring the central defensive partnership of new signings Rob Kiernan and Danny Wilson.

McGregor started his career at Cowdenbeath and had a spell at Arniston Rangers before returning to the Fife side.

He earned a move to St Mirren, where his form attracted the interest of then Rangers manager Ally McCoist.

The 30-year-old switched to Govan last summer and was one of the bright spots in an otherwise dismal campaign with his assured displays at the back.

He has failed to feature in any of the club's six matches so far this campaign though and leaves in order to find regular first-team football.

A Rangers spokesperson said: "Darren leaves with the club's best wishes for a successful future."

Meanwhile, Warburton is still keen on finalising a deal with John Eustace, the former Derby County midfielder who has been training at Murray Park for the past six weeks. The 35-year-old suffered a season-ending knee injury last January and has endured another set-back during his return to fitness with Rangers, although nothing too severe.

“I have got no doubt that John will be a great asset to us,” said Warburton. “He is getting closer. We worked John really hard at the same levels as the first team, maybe a week too early. He had some light bone bruising that aggravated and flared it up so we had to calm it down again and go.

“He is a pro who wants to play football. He is a really solid character as well. Everyone is working together now to get John as fit as quickly as we can.”

With Warburton looking to add Eustace to his wave of new additions, Jon Daly yesterday penned a deal with Raith Rovers after being freed by the Ibrox club.

The 32-year-old Irishman, who also attracted a late bid from Hibernian, could be set for his debut having been added to the Raith Rovers squad for tonight’s League Cup encounter with Hamilton. Daly won’t have long to wait for a return to Ibrox either. Raith Rovers travel to Govan on Scottish Championship duty a week on Saturday.
