AYR got their season in the BT Premiership off to a flying start with a 32-3 away win at Glasgow Hawks.

The men from Millbrae finished second in the table after the regular season in 2014/15, but lost out in the play-off semi-finals to Melrose.

With the additions they made in the summer they are once again expected to be in the top four and they certainly played well at Old Anniesland.

Tries from Blair MacPherson (2), Haddon McPherson, Steve Longwell and Pete McCallum came in this one with Grant Anderson adding seven points with the boot. Hawks' only points came through a drop goal by George Horne.

Meanwhile, Currie were also in top form. The Malleny Park men ran in nine tries to overpower Stirling County 58-15.

Mike Vernel led the way with two tries while captain Ross Weston was amongst the others to go over.

Sam Pecqueur, Ally Miller and Nyle Godsmark all scored tries on their Melrose league debuts as the men from The Greenyards toughed out a 31-15 victory at Hawick. The other Melrose try came from Joe Helps while he kicked nine points in the bonus point win and Jason Baggott added a conversion.

Craig Russell was among the try scorers for Hawick at Mansfield Park.

Gala got the better of Selkirk in the other Border derby, coming out 32-13 victors with their former skipper George Graham helping himself to one of the tries.
