Scotland wing Sean Lamont is comfortable he does all he can to earn selection for a third World Cup - but he will not take inclusion for granted.

Lamont could not have had a better weekend ahead of Vern Cotter's announcement of his final squad on Tuesday afternoon.

The 34-year-old scored two tries as Scotland thrashed Italy 48-7 at Murrayfield to further boost his hopes of being in the 31-man pool.

But Lamont left Murrayfield eager to spend some time with his family trying not to think about Cotter's next move, while relaxed about the fact he has done what he can to add to his 96 caps in England in the coming weeks.

Lamont has played in all three warm-up games and was heavily involved in Scotland's two tries in Dublin, and looks to have done enough to seal his place.

"I would like to think so, however, I have said it before, I don't take anything for granted anymore," the Glasgow wing said.

"That's where complacency comes in. The way I see it, I've done as much as I can. The power is now in other people's hands.

"It's down to the boss, what he decides. I've done as much as I can and if that's not enough for him, then so be it.

"It's what is right for Scotland. That's all I care about and it's all I have cared about for a number of years."

After snatching a late win in Turin the previous weekend, Scotland kick-started their World Cup preparations with a stunning victory in Edinburgh to vindicate Lamont's optimism about their chances in a group that also contains South Africa, Samoa, Japan and the United States.

"We can be great, this year we have to step up and realise it," Lamont said. "We had a good win on Saturday but next week is a different kettle of fish. France have been on fire, in the England game they had lots of tries in them. It will be a totally different test.

"As long as we can keep improving every week and hit the ground running for the World Cup. We have a tough pool so we need all the players we can, it's a big load so it's going to be a real squad effort.

"If I'm there, I'm there. If I'm not, then the guys who get their chance have got to take it."
