Islam Feruz has promised not to "let down" Alan Stubbs after joining Hibernian on a season-long loan from Chelsea.

The former Celtic youth, who will turn 20 later this month, was once regarded as the nation's hottest young prospect but has been dogged by controversy since leaving Parkhead acrimoniously for Stamford Bridge four years ago.

In recent times, the Somalia-born striker has had to endure questions over his attitude and discipline, and accusations of an ego and arrogance, with his experiences during previous loans hardly dispelling the notion that a player once expected to become a 'poster boy' for the Scotland national team instead attracts trouble.

A season-long switch to Russian second division side Krylia Sovetov lasted just 24 hours last year, whilst a subsequent move to OFI Crete in Greece produced just three appearances and was cut short.

The Scotland under-21 cap then tried his luck closer to home in January and joined Blackpool, where he made a further two substitute's appearances before returning to Chelsea prematurely in February.

Stubbs yesterday welcomed "another really exciting young talent" to Easter Road and Feruz insists he is intent on beginning a new, successful chapter in his fledgling career under the guidance of the Hibs head coach.

Feruz said: "I know Hibs are a big club in Scotland and I'm very excited to be here, and I can't wait to get started.

"He (Stubbs) knows my situation and he just wants to get me up and running again.

"I'm looking forward to playing and helping the team, and not letting him down.

"The manager has shown faith me and I'm looking forward to repaying it by giving 100 per cent when I'm selected."

Perhaps the presence of some familiar faces in the Hibs squad will help Feruz settle and allow the Championship hopefuls to tap into his undoubted talents.

Once described by former SFA performance director Mark Wotte as reminding him of Brazil legend Romario, the 19-year-old has shared Scotland duties with the likes of Fraser Fyvie, Dylan McGeouch and John McGinn in the past.

And he is hopeful that will be of benefit to both him and his new club team-mates in the coming weeks.

He added on Hibs TV: "I've played with a few of the Hibs squad for the Scotland under-21s and some in the under-19s for Scotland, so I know what to expect and they know what to expect of me.

"These are good players; I've played with them before and I'm looking forward to playing alongside them."

Stubbs has been eager to strengthen his attacking options after starting the new campaign with both Farid El Alagui and summer signing James Keatings out injured and is now hoping he can get the best out of his latest arrival.

He said: "I am delighted that we have managed to secure Islam on loan.

"He is another really exciting young talent, a player who has fantastic ability and potential. He will add a different dimension to the options that we currently have.

"We would like to thank Chelsea for allowing Islam to join us on loan, and we're looking forward to helping him realise his undoubted potential."
