THE members of the Rangers Supporters Trust have voted overwhelmingly in favour of all 11 resolutions at the Ibrox club’s Annual General Meeting next week.
Nearly all of the 6,250-strong group’s members who took part in an online poll backed a special resolution which calls for the voting rights of any shareholder involved in the running of another club to be removed.
The resolution has been included in an effort to prevent the Championship club, which was fined for breaching strict SFA dual ownership rules earlier this year, being punished in the future.
If further issues arise in this area in the future it could lead to Rangers suffering more onerous sanctions – including a heavier fine and possible expulsion from the Scottish Cup.
Mike Ashley, the Newcastle United owner, received special permission from the SFA to buy an 8.92 per cent stake in Rangers back in 2012.
Elsewhere, a further special resolution which would allow the club to issue shares on a non-pre-emptive basis has also been backed by 98.95 per cent of trust members.
This will allow the Three Bears and chairman Dave King to convert their loans to share capital if passed. However, both special resolutions require the support of 75 per cent of the shareholders at the AGM.
The Rangers Supporters Trust currently owns a 2.12 per cent stake in the Glasgow club through its BuyRangers fan ownership scheme.
The results of the poll have been hailed as an emphatic endorsement of the current Rangers board, which seized power at an EGM back in March, by the influential fans’ organisation.
A trust spokesman said: “It’s been a fairly incredible turnaround since the EGM when we were out campaigning and trying to muster support for what is now the board
“We were trying to get proxies from shareholders so we could oust a board we didn’t want to be there. Now everything seems pretty much as normal.
“We would be very surprised if the results of this poll didn’t mirror what the wider fanbase want. We certainly expect most independent shareholders along with Rangers First to vote in the same way. We would urge all shareholders to make sure their vote counts at the AGM.”
The Rangers AGM will be held at the Clyde Auditorium on Friday, November 27.
