Billy Davies, the former Motherwell, Preston North End, Derby County and Nottingham Forest manager, last night revealed he was approached by a third party about taking charge at Rangers.

Davies, who has been out of work since parting company with Forest two years ago, didn't specify when he was contacted about the post in an interview with Clyde 1 Superscoreboard.

But the 51-year-old, who spent six years as a player at Ibrox at the start of his career, stated that he was put off due to "too much politics, too little football".

"Let me confirm that in the last two years I haven’t applied for one job and when I looked at the Rangers situation there were many different factions involved in trying to take over," he said.

"There was all this speculation about all these different names that were involved. In my opinion, too much politics, too little football.

"This was an unstable club at that time, and there’s absolutely no doubt, under the present circumstances, that the current chairman and board have to micromanage.

"I didn’t think that it was time for me to step into that type of environment. Good luck to anybody else that does, good luck to anybody else that wanted to take on that. That’s their decision.

"I was approached by a third party. In this business you get approached by third parties, third party press, third party agent, third party connection. Was Davies approached by a third party or third parties in relation to the Rangers situation? Yes, I was.

"Did Davies apply for the job or did Davies’ advisors have any conversation in relation to the job? No, they didn’t."

Davies confirmed he had spoken to Kilmarnock about the vacancy that arose at Rugby Park following the departure of Gary Locke earlier this season, but had decided against taking the position.

"There have been job offers," he said. "There have also been people come along and ask me would I be an investor or consider ownership of football clubs.

"It (Kilmarnock) was like many others. I’ve said all along that the one thing that I will always do is I will always give courtesy to any interested party, no matter what division, size of club, financial position of club or league, or country that they may be in.

"And I’ve done that with Kilmarnock. I listened, we had a good chat, and like one or two others in the past, I decided that at this moment in time it’s not for me."
