HIBERNIAN are preparing themselves for English Championship side Rotherham making a move to lure Alan Stubbs away from Easter Road.

The South Yorkshire club's chairman, Tony Stewart, revealed he was set to approach two clubs about their current managers over the next few days, as he sought to find a replacement for Neil Warnock.

Stubbs and former Easter Road boss Tony Mowbray, currently at Coventry City, are believed to be the pair who head Rotherham's wanted list with the odds on both slashed by bookmakers to 4-1 ON on one of them landing the job.

Rotherham and Stubbs actually spoke last October about the managerial position, the former Celtic and Everton player reportedly made the final set of interviews, but the club at that time went for Neil Redfearn.

Stewart has already spoken to the recently sacked Newcastle United manager Steve McClaren and ex-Blackburn Rovers boss Gary Bowyer but neither seem to have done enough to convince him they are what he wants.

The club hope to make an announcement by next Wednesday and this could test the resolve of Hibernian and indeed Stubbs himself if they make a formal bid for the Englishman. They will almost certainly be able to double his wages.

“We’ll make the approaches and see what develops over the weekend,” said Stewart. "I think if we get permission to open talks, the rest would be plain sailing. There have been six possible candidates and the shortlist has been narrowed down to four.

"The applications were excellent in terms of numbers and quality. In fact, the quality of them has been superb.”

Mowbray, who narrowly missed out on the League One play-offs, has a good record of working at that level; however, last Saturday's historic Scottish Cup Final means that Stubbs's stock has never been higher.

Stubbs has maintained that he would wait until the summer before deciding on his future, although after the win over Rangers he spoke about plans being put in place for next season's attempt to win promotion back to the Premiership.
