Paul Lawrie has been named as one of Darren Clarke’s European vice-captains for this year’s Ryder Cup at Hazeltine.

The 47-year-old Aberdonian, who made his debut in the biennial event during his Open winning year of 1999 and returned to the team in 2012 to play his part in the Miracle of Medinah, joins Padraig Harrington and Thomas Bjorn on Clarke’s backroom team. The European skipper will name a further two vice-captains in July.

It had been widely tipped that Lawrie would be given the nod by his good friend Clarke and the Scot is now relishing the prospect of returning to the Ryder Cup cut-and-thrust.

He said: “Having played in two Ryder Cups, both in America, I would hope to draw on those experiences and offer some advice and guidance to the European team.

“Darren and myself had this conversation quite a while ago. I wasn’t 100 per cent fit and didn’t really feel I could make the team as a player. I’m excited and honoured.”

Clarke added: "Paul is a highly respected major championship winner and knows exactly what it will take to reach our intended destination. His calm, considered approach and strength of character will be of immense value."
