ANDY Murray has been reunited with Ivan Lendl, the coach with whom he has enjoyed the most successful spell of his career so far. The Scot, who is competing at Queen’s this week, is hopeful that his partnership with the former world No 1 can be a long-term one.
“Hopefully it will be for a long time, from my side,” Murray said yesterday after Lendl’s return to his coaching team was announced. “He’s coming over, he’ll be here for the tournament and it’s good for him to spend a bit of time with the rest of the team as well to see how things work out. But provided everything’s good, it will hopefully go on for a long time.”
Lendl previously worked with Murray for two years from 2012 and played a big part in his breakthrough after he had lost several major finals. Murray won Olympic gold at Wimbledon just a month after losing in the final at the All-England Club, then went on to win the US Open later that year. The success continued the following year when he became the first British man in 77 years to win the Wimbledon title.
“I think the most successful period of my career was while I was working with Ivan,” Murray added. “I know what he can offer. The experiences he had I think psychologically helped me in the major competitions. I hope he can bring that same experience and those same benefits that he did last time.”
