HAMBURG fans have launched a petition for their club to sign cult hero Will Grigg from Wigan Athletic.

The striker became an unlikely star of Euro 2016 without even kicking a ball thanks to the song 'Will Grigg's on Fire', which has been adapted from 1997 hit 'Freed From Desire' by Gala.

Wigan fans began singing it last season after the 24-year-old went on a streak of scoring 25 goals in League One for the Latics, before Northern Ireland supporters took it to France this summer.

Fans of German Bundesliga side Hamburg have now created an online petition to encourage their club to make a bid for the forward.

It had attracted more than 6000 signatures by Thursday morning on the website openpetition.de.

"After several proposals on social networks we start herewith a petition to direct the attention of HSV (Hamburg) to a transfer of the Northern Ireland international Will Grigg," the petition said.

It claims that Grigg's market value is around £1.2 million and says he would 'bring in that much several times over in merchandising.'

Grigg was named in Michael O'Neill's squad for the European Championships but failed to make an appearance in their four matches.

He scored 28 times in 43 appearances for Wigan last season and has previously represented MK Dons, Brentford and Walsall.
