CELTIC have announced that winger James Forrest has signed a new three-year contract with the club.

The 25-year-old scored the defending champions' opening goal of the Scottish Premiership season against Hearts on Sunday and has now committed to the Hoops until 2019.

Forrest came through Celtic's youth ranks, but his future at the club had been in doubt after he rejected a renewal at the start of the year.

However, the 13-time Scotland international was given another chance by new manager Brendan Rodgers and will continue to represent the club he has already racked up 193 appearances for.

A club statement read: "Celtic are delighted to announce that James Forrest has signed a new three-year contract, committing himself to the club until 2019.

"The winger, who joined the club when he was just nine-years-old, and who has come through the Celtic Youth Academy, has already made 193 appearances, scoring 31 goals.

"The latest of those came in the 2-1 victory over Hearts at Tynecastle last weekend, and the Scottish internationalist is in the squad for tonight's game and hoping to hit the target when the Hoops take on Motherwell at Celtic Park in the last 16 of the League Cup."
