Motherwell captain Keith Lasley insists there is no chance of the Fir Park side suffering a Parkhead hangover in the wake of their 5-0 hammering to Celtic.

Going into Wednesday’s Betfred Cup tie on the back of four straight wins, Mark McGhee’s team failed to recreate that form as they were swept aside by a rampant Celtic team that, if it wasn’t for goalkeeper Craig Samson, could have easily added more to their tally.

The Lanarkshire club have the chance to get back on track tomorrow when St Johnstone come to Fir Park, and Lasley has reassured their supporters that the players will be ready to try and take their Premiership tally to two wins from two games.

“The most pressing issue for us is making sure the game is out of our systems,” he said.

“We have a good spirit in the dressing room. It’s up to me and the other experienced guys and management that we go into the St Johnstone game with a clear mind.

“Any team that gets too carried away when we are winning often comes unstuck. On the same token a side that lets themselves get unhinged after a poor performance and result isn’t any use.

“We will be ready, don’t worry about that.

“To play in it was no fun. Especially when Celtic get a two or three goal lead.

“It’s something we have to learn from. Especially for the guys who haven’t experienced it before, and make sure it doesn’t happen again so the next time we go there we stop that trend.”

Lasley was in the stand the last time the two sides met back in May when Celtic demolished their visitors 7-0 on the last day of the season.

While that was painful viewing, it was an even harder 90 minutes for the Motherwell captain on Wednesday. He acknowledges there were two factors at play, but is not prepared to dwell on it too much.

“It’s disappointing to lose any game but we know ourselves that when we went to Celtic and won last season that we didn’t have a failure in the team. To go there and win that has to happen and it certainly wasn’t the case last night,” he said.

“I felt Celtic did play well. It was a combination of that and us not being on top of our game that led to only one outcome.

“It was tough to take, but we have to look forward. We have made a good start in the league. Training went well the day after the Celtic game and there’s no point feeling sorry for ourselves.

“The game on the last day of the season has been mentioned but that was the last game of the season with a lot going on. The two games are totally different.

“We went into Wednesday’s game in a good place and looking forward to it. There’s not too much more we can say, we just never played near where we can.”
