AUSTRALIAN footballers who have moved to Scotland to ply their trade over the years have enjoyed vastly differing fortunes; for every Scott McDonald, Craig Moore and Mark Viduka there has been a Matt McKay, a Trent McClenehan or a Kevin Muscat.

Tom Rogic, the attacking midfielder who this week signed a three year contract with Celtic which ties him to Parkhead until 2019, can already, despite still being just 23, be considered a resounding Antipodean success story.

Seeing how the skilful and industrious forward fares under the guidance of Brendan Rodgers, a coach whose teams are renowned for playing positive attacking football, is an enticing prospect for many Celtic supporters and, for that matter, the player himself.

Rogic certainly excelled in just his second start of the 2016/17 campaign against Motherwell at Celtic Park on Wednesday night. He scored two goals in a resounding 5-0 victory to help book a place against Alloa at home in the quarter-finals of the Betfred Cup next month. He believes there is much more to come.

Rogic has revealed how the arrival of the Irishman, the former Swansea City and Liverpool manager whose appointment has led to a dramatic increase in attendances, was a factor in his decision to commit his long-term future to the Scottish champions.

"There is a buzz about the place and it is exciting,” he said. "There is a positive vibe around the place. The manager has shaken the place up a bit and the players have reacted to that and so have the fans. The atmosphere has been fantastic at our matches and we are going to need that in games coming up.

"Everyone wants to impress the manager as with any new change at that kind of level. The manager having ties to the club has also seen the fans respond well to that. I think you can see that in the way and the style of football that we are playing and it is still early days. Hopefully things can only get better.

"We have exciting games coming up, we have made three quality signings so far and everybody has contributed. If we add one or two more then great, but the squad is shaping up well. There is a lot of competition for places which is healthy. The Herald: 20/07/16 CHAMPIONS LEAGUE SECOND QUALIFYING ROUND . CELTIC V LINCOLN RED IMPS FC . CELTIC PARK - GLASGOW . "There is a lot more to come. It is still early days. We are into the next round of the League Cup, but nobody is getting carried away. I think the manager's methods and style of play that he wants to get across are sinking in. Of course it will take time for everything to gel.”

Rogic, signed by Celtic amid considerable excitement from Central Coast Mariners for £500,000 three years ago, has struggled with injuries and form and has taken some time to settle in this country.

Indeed, it was only last season that he finally established himself as an indispensable first team player. His stunning long-range strike against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park in March secured a 1-0 win that was crucial in his side going on and retaining the Ladbrokes Premiership and was also voted Goal of the Season.

Sure, he missed the deciding penalty in the William Hill Scottish Cup semi-final defeat to Rangers at Hampden in April. But video replays later showed the ball had moved on the relaid turf just before he made contact with it. Plus, his omission from the starting line-up that day cost his side dearly. His arrival on the field coincided with a stark improvement in their play and he netted a fine goal.

Having endured that difficult start to his Celtic career, the Australian internationalist was, despite strong interest in his services from several English Championship clubs, appreciates getting a regular game and revealed he was always keen to agree a new contract.

"I am very settled here and I am happy both on and off the pitch,” he said. “You get to play club football here week in, week out and it is pretty special. I don't take that for granted. I have been here for a while and I hope to be here for some time yet. Leaving was never something that crossed my mind."

The win over Motherwell was impressive on several fronts. The quality of football produced by Celtic was the best of Rodgers’s short tenure. New signings Moussa Dembele and Scott Sinclair excelled and James Forrest and Rogic celebrated signing contract extensions with fine performances.

The fact that Nir Bitton, Leigh Griffiths, Kieran Tierney and Kolo Toure were all omitted from the squad also underlined the strength in depth which Rodgers, who is still keen to bring in more players, has at his disposal.

"The new signings have done fantastically well,” said Rogic. “Scott Sinclair was great on Sunday against Hearts and against Motherwell on Wednesday night. It is important that players come in and do well as it doesn't always happen that simply.

"Moussa Dembele is now getting his goals which is great for him and the team. Kolo Toure is going to be a massive signing for us. His experience in the dressing room and the training ground alone every day is invaluable. Kolo is someone who everyone can definitely learn from every day.

"The manager has made some great signings so and they have definitely added to our squad. They have been signings of quality and that can only make us a better team.”
