Chris Sutton might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but there must be few places where the BT Sport pundit’s presence is less well-received than at Firhill.

Partick Thistle have yet to win in front of the BT cameras, and they extended that wretched run last night as Aberdeen left Maryhill with three points and moved back to second in the Premiership table.

Anthony O’Connor gave Aberdeen the lead shortly before half-time, with Thistle hitting back through Adam Barton soon after the restart. They enjoyed parity for just a couple of minutes though, as a sweet lob from Jayden Stockley sealed a welcome victory for the visitors.

Alan Archibald stuck with the same outfield players for the third game in succession in the 3-5-2 formation that has brought them joy of late.

Derek McInnes decided to shake things up a bit though in an attempt to arrest their run of two defeats in a row, making three changes to his side and shifting to a straight 4-4-2.

Out went Mark Reynolds, Niall McGinn and Wes Burns, with James Maddison, Stockley and Adam Rooney coming into the side who lost to Celtic.

Aberdeen started the stronger of the two sides, but it was a low-key opening until Abdul Osman did well to nick in front of Stockley and deflect his header wide from inside the Thistle area.

The home side had shown little sign of attacking intent early on, but they should have taken the lead a little over 20 minutes in when Christie Elliott’s ball over the top from the right put Ade Azeez in on goal. The striker tried to lift the bouncing ball over Joe Lewis, but didn’t get enough on it and the Dons keeper collected easily.

That signalled a spell of good pressure from Thistle though, and Andy Considine had to be alert at the near post to divert a low Kris Doolan ball behind after a fine passing move, before Azeez flashed an overhead kick over following the corner.

Another wicked corner delivery from Sean Welsh then caused problems, with Danny Devine toe-poking over from close range after the ball had cleared a scrum of heads at the near post.

Aberdeen had fallen out of the game, but a counter-punch from Johnny Hayes almost had them ahead as his swerving shot from distance curled just the wrong side of Thorsten Stuckmann’s goal.

They didn’t have to wait long for the opening goal though, as a well-worked set-piece just over five minutes from the break broke the deadlock.

Ryan Jack tapped a free-kick to Maddison who hung the ball up for Considine to attack. His header found Rooney, who touched the ball back for O’Connor to drill low into the net from eight yards out.

Welsh burst into the Aberdeen area only to be beaten to the ball by Lewis as the home side tried to find a swift response, but it was the visitors who went in ahead at the break.

Thistle boss Archibald reverted to four at the back for the second half, pushing Barton up into midfield, and it was a move that paid immediate dividends.

Callum Booth got forward on the left and put in a cross that looped off Shay Logan’s head and had to be tipped over by Lewis. Welsh hung the corner to the back post where Barton showed hunger and desire to beat Kenny McLean to the ball and bullet his header into the top corner.

Just two minutes later though, Aberdeen were back ahead as Stockley produced an exquisite finish to burst Thistle’s bubble.

The striker latched onto Considine’s ball from the back before playing a nice exchange with Maddison that saw him bearing down on the box. With the giant Stuckmann approaching, Stockley deftly lifted the ball over his six foot six inch frame and it floated feather-like into the corner of the net.

The goal seemed to knock the stuffing out of Thistle coming so soon after their leveller, and they rarely threatened to peg back the Dons again until the final few minutes when substitute Chris Erskine put the ball straight at Lewis when presented with a clear sight of goal, and Devine then did the same with the last kick of the match.
