JAMIE McCART got used to beating Rangers while playing for Celtic in the youth leagues.

However, the victory over the Ibrox men on Friday night, his first in a senior game, will be long remembered as the best day of his career so far, due to the fact it took Inverness off the bottom of the Premiership and it was the Highland club’s 1000th game.

McCart, on loan at the Tulloch Stadium from Celtic until the end of this season, was superb in the 2-1 win which was desperately needed by his new club.

The defender hardly put a foot wrong and was delighted to play a part in what could turn out to be one of the best nights for Caley Thistle since they won the Scottish Cup.

“It was just what we needed,” said McCart. “The performances have been there and it was just results we needed to get off the bottom of the table. The way we did it, against a big team like Rangers, it’s massive for us – it gives us a massive boost. We’re now looking forward to the game against Celtic on Wednesday.

“I’ve played Rangers before at youth level. I think there’s a wee difference in quality! It was a brilliant experience on Friday evening but the main thing was to get the win.

“Personal experiences aside, it’s all about the team and trying to climb up the table. We know we can do it if we keep putting in performances like that. Especially against two big clubs in a row, Hearts and Rangers, it gives us a lot of confidence going into the game on Wednesday.”

Richie Foran, the Inverness manager, has said all season that his team were better than the results showed.

“Even before I came in, the manager was saying the performances had been there throughout the season, it was just the results,” McCart said. “Coming in, I can see it first hand. “The quality and performances are there but we’re starting to get results now, which are the main thing. It definitely doesn’t have the feel of a club in relegation trouble.”
